Blog or Podcast
Blog or Podcast – which do you prefer?
A blog post is a form of communication many of us have adopted in recent years as a way to speak passionately about a subject we love or that is close to our hearts/minds. We have usually chosen to create a blog as an outlet for information we have gathered ourselves through our own personal experience or picked up from others over the years. While blogs have a general them, you can create unique blog posts to write about anything. As a rule of thumb it is generally a good idea to maintain a primary theme throughout your posts so that people know what to expect (in a general sense) and so you can create a niche following for those that seek information on whatever you are blogging about (think of your blog as being your own unique twist on a specific subject or topic). The pros for writing a blog are that you can sit on your laptop and write one at your leisure, you can write as long or as short a post as you like, you may include photos to help engage with your reader and they can easily be shared with others. Perhaps blog posts are the best way to share these topics we find so fascinating with others, or are they?
Maybe you see the title of a blog post and think it sounds interesting but you simply don’t have the time to sit down and read it, or maybe your eyes are sore from staring at a computer monitor all day and don’t want to strain them anymore. You make your way onto the train or bus to commute home or maybe you’ve already arrived home and just want to sit and relax. Listening to a blog post would be so much easier at these moments – enter, podcasts. These relatively new forms of communication enable people to listen to recorded audio at their leisure; be it on your commute to work, during your lunch walk or sitting at home, just press play on your audio device and bathe yourself in audible scientific information. Podcasts are so simple to listen to, they allow us to engage with the person behind the microphone instead of the laptop keyboard. We get to hear what the person has to say instead of reading it and hear the passion they have for their chosen subject.
Blog or podcast, we each have our opinion, but I do urge you to download a podcast from one of the many great science-related shows available on iTunes. They are a great source of information; most are in the form of a casual interview where the host asks the interviewee questions about his or her background and their views or opinions or certain aspects of the discussion topic.
Think about it, the next time you feel like getting some new science into your head, would you rather read a blog post or listen to a podcast?
Let me know in the comments below or on Twitter (@drmikeographer) which you prefer, blog or podcast! As always, thanks for taking the time to read this blog post, I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
